FEDERAL FIRE SERVICE INTENSIFIES ENFORCEMENT OF  FIRE SAFETY CODE                                                                                   01-07-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                                     The Federal Fire Service says all public buildings such as markets, offices, places of worship and schools must adhere to fire safety code or face sanctions.

The Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Jaji AbdulGaniyu gave the warning during the inauguration of the committee on the Research and Development of the Federal Fire Service Training curriculum in Abuja.

While speaking on the recent incessant fire outbreaks at Karu Market, Dangote refinery and a section of Christ Embassy Church in Lagos, Mr. Jaji explained that lack of proper planing and access to these places during emergency situation such as fire outbreak was a major challenge to the service.

He particularly pointed out the incident at the Karu Market, Abuja which he said lack of accessible road to the shops gutted by the fire was a big challenge to the men of the fire service during the inferno.

The Controller General maintained that this formed part of the reasons, why the Minister of Interior intensified efforts towards making sure that the law establishing the Federal Fire Service which was enacted in 1964 was refilled to empower the service to properly sanctions defaulters.

On the development of a new curriculum for the training of men of the fire servic in the country, Mr. Jaji said the aim was to promote efficiency and professionalism in tandem with the global best practices.

The Chief Consultant for the curriculum development and retired Assistant Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Machie Olisemeka said the new curriculum will match the new trends in fire fighting and prevention.

He said the curriculum has been designed to meet international standard maintaining that men of the Federal Fire Service can now work in any part of the world as core professionals.
