FG CLARIFIES SUBJECT CHOICES UNDER NEW SENIOR SECONDARY CURRICULUM

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Federal Ministry of Education has clarified issues surrounding subject selection as WAEC registration continues. The Ministry explained that students are free to choose any approved subject in the Senior Secondary School Curriculum, as long as their choices are properly guided by parents, schools or certified counsellors.

It stressed that science students may select subjects from arts or social sciences, and vice-versa, because the curriculum is designed to be flexible, student-focused and supportive of diverse career paths.

The Ministry also noted that the change of Information and Communication Technology to Digital Technology is only a name change, and students who previously offered ICT are fully qualified to register and sit for Digital Technology.

On trade subjects, it clarified that students may register for any of the six approved trade subjects only if their schools offer and have taught them. Students who were not exposed to trade subjects are not required to register for any.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to smooth and inclusive implementation of the revised curriculum, urging all stakeholders to rely on verified information and guide students accurately as WAEC registration continues.
