YOBE STATE SEEKS MOROCCAN ASSISTANCE TO IMPROVE LIVESTOCK BREED, AND PRODUCTION

By Sadiq Aminu Yobe state Government, through the Ministry for Livestock Development, has engaged Morocco’s largest livestock farm, “Maroc Lait,” for the transfer of technology, experience, and knowledge to enhance livestock development in the state.
According to the delegation, this move prepares for the smooth launch of the newly established Yobe State Ministry of Livestock Development.
Secretary to the Yobe State Government and leader of the delegation, Baba Malam Wali, explained that the state government is committed to leveraging existing potential to boost livestock development.
“As a leading state in livestock production, Yobe State is willing to explore every available opportunity to support existing livestock farmers and create new ones,” he said.
The SSG affirmed that the Yobe State Government would provide the necessary resources to improve livestock development and empower livestock farmers.
Responding to the delegation, Director General of Maroc Lait, Mohammed Raita, praised the establishment of independent livestock ministries by both federal and state governments in Nigeria, recognizing it as a positive step toward improving livestock development and revenue generation.
He advised the Yobe State Government to focus on developing effective management practices, genetics, feed strategies, water resources, and veterinary services to ensure successful livestock farming.
“We have developed a fodder laboratory for the production of fodder seeds to provide healthy and nutritious feed to the cows, enabling livestock farmers to produce more dairy and beef,” Raita stated.
Raita explained that Morocco produces over two billion liters of healthy dairy annually, generating substantial revenue for the country.
He recommended that the Yobe State Government introduce artificial insemination to crossbreed with local varieties, enhancing local breeds and improving both beef and dairy production.
He assured that Maroc Lait would provide cost-effective services to individual livestock farmers, cooperative organizations, and the state government.
Earlier, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Mustapha Goniri, stated that the government is committed to investing in livestock development to create employment and generate wealth.
“We want to improve dairy production from the three liters currently produced daily by local breeds to at least 30 liters per cow, using improved breeds and enhancing the capacity of existing livestock,” Goniri explained.
Goniri noted that the state government has already implemented measures such as grazing reserves, water points, and veterinary services to support livestock farmers across the state.
