By Sadiq Aminu At least 35 people are missing after two boats collided on the Gummi River in Zamfara State. One of the boats, carrying over 40 passengers, mostly farmers heading to their fields, capsized after the crash.
According to Abubakar, one of the boats had developed problems mid-journey, and while another boat operator tried to help, the two vessels collided and sank.
So far, only seven people have been rescued, with 35 still unaccounted for. Witnesses, including Zayyanu Aliyu, revealed that the passengers included men, women, and children. “They were warned about the overcrowded boat but refused to get off,” Aliyu noted.
One survivor, Murtala Sa’idu, shared his experience, saying, “I was saved, but over 30 others are still lost in the river.”
As of the time of this report, search teams continue to comb the river for the missing, though there has been no official government response. Rescue efforts are ongoing, while families of the missing await updates with fading hope.
