NIGERIA NEEDS STATE POLICE FOR FASTER SECURITY RESPONSE – DEPUTY SPEAKER

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Benjamin Kalu, says Nigeria can no longer delay the creation of state police if it truly wants to tackle insecurity.

Speaking in Abuja after attending the WTO-IPU forum in Geneva, Kalu stressed that the current centralized police structure slows response time and falls below global standards. He called for a national public hearing to let Nigerians decide on the proposed State Police Bill, arguing that the security of lives and property should come before political fears.

He also urged Nigerians to remain patient and engaged with ongoing reforms, commended state governments for diversifying the economy, and reaffirmed his support for diaspora voting once the local electoral system is strengthened.
