INEC URGES QUICK PASSAGE OF ELECTORAL REFORMS AHEAD OF of 2027

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on the National Assembly to fast-track electoral reforms to ensure smooth preparations for the 2027 elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, made this appeal in Abuja while meeting with the European Union (EU) Election Observation follow-up mission. He noted that INEC had acted on 8 of the EU’s 23 recommendations, while the rest required action from the legislature, judiciary, political parties, and other stakeholders.

EU delegation leader Barry Andrews commended the progress but stressed that Nigeria must move beyond half-measures and guarantee transparency to strengthen democracy.
