By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has reaffirmed its commitment to using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve weather and climate services for farmers across Nigeria.

This comes after a visit by the Agricultural Innovation Mechanism for Scale (AIM for Scale) team, led by Imara Salas and Mohammad Farrae, to NiMet’s Director-General, Professor Charles Anosike, in Abuja.

Professor Anosike appreciated AIM for Scale for selecting Nigeria as part of its first African AI Weather Project pilot. He emphasized NiMet’s readiness to adopt AI tools that enhance forecasting accuracy and support farmers in making informed decisions.

Imara Salas, Director of the AIM for Scale Secretariat, praised the partnership, noting that the initiative aims to deliver scalable, tech-driven solutions that reach millions of farmers.

AIM for Scale, backed by global partners including the Gates Foundation, NASA, MIT, USAID, and the World Bank, seeks to strengthen agricultural innovation and expand AI-powered weather services.

The visit explored ways to co-develop strategies and attract investments to boost agricultural productivity through advanced weather forecasting in Nigeria.
