KANO RESTRUCTURES MALARIA PREVENTION TEAM FOR BETTER PERFORMANCE

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Kano State Government has approved the restructuring of the Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) Programme Team following a review of the 2026 programme’s preparation and first-round implementation.

The state Ministry of Health said the move is aimed at improving coordination, supervision, monitoring and accountability across the programme.

Under the new structure, the team will be led by the Director of Public Health in the ministry, Dr Ibrahim Aliyu Umar, alongside other programme, monitoring and evaluation officers at the state and local government levels.

The government said the restructuring followed gaps identified during the first round of the 2026 SMC exercise. It is expected to improve data management, reporting, monitoring and transparency in the distribution of medicines and other resources.

The restructured team will begin work immediately to ensure the effective implementation of the remaining two rounds of the programme.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to using SMC to prevent and control malaria among children under five and urged all stakeholders to support the intervention.
