INEC ASSURES AU OF TRANSPARENT AND CREDIBLE 2027 ELECTION

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured the African Union (AU) that Nigeria will conduct a transparent, credible, inclusive and peaceful General Election in 2027.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, gave the assurance in Abuja when the AU Pre-Election Needs Assessment Mission visited the commission.

Represented by National Commissioner Rhoda Gumus, Amupitan said the visit provided an opportunity for INEC and the AU to strengthen cooperation towards a successful election.

He said the commission was intensifying operational, logistical and technological preparations to ensure that all eligible Nigerians can participate in the electoral process.

Leader of the AU delegation and former Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister, Demeke Mekonnen, said the mission was in Nigeria to assess the country’s electoral preparedness and identify areas requiring further support.

Mekonnen said the delegation would engage INEC and other stakeholders on issues including voter registration, electoral technology, logistics, funding, inclusion, transparency, security and results management.

He reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to supporting Nigeria and promoting democratic governance across Africa.
