NCoS CONTAINS CHOLERA OUTBREAK AT KANO CUSTODIAL CENTRE

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has announced that the cholera outbreak at the Kurmawa Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kano State has been contained.
The Service said the outbreak was confirmed on September 23, 2026, following laboratory tests carried out by its medical team in partnership with Kano State health authorities.
The outbreak was first detected on September 17 after an inmate developed vomiting and diarrhoea. Two people died during the outbreak, one at the custodial centre and another at the Kano State Infectious Diseases Hospital.
Following the development, the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, ordered emergency medical measures, including treatment, disease surveillance and enhanced preventive measures.
The NCoS said no additional deaths had been recorded since the outbreak was confirmed and that it was working with the Kano State Government to prevent further transmission.
The Controller-General has also deployed senior medical personnel from the NCoS headquarters to the facility for continued monitoring.
The Service assured the public that medical services remain available at its custodial facilities and that measures are in place to protect the health and welfare of inmates.
