FRSC ARRAIGNS MAN FOR ASSAULT ON PERSONNEL                                                                                                                                 29-04-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                               The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has arraigned a motorist, Godwin Alex, before the Zone Two Magistrate Court Abuja for assaulting one of its personnel, Isa Freeman, and severing two of his fingers in the process.

Presenting the case, the prosecuting counsel, Olanrewaju Osho, stated that Alex carried out the act when he was apprehended for driving against traffic along Kabusa in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

Osho further explained that, instead of cooperating with the FRSC personnel, Alex reportedly turned violent, leading to the altercation.

During the arraignment, Alex pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against him, and his counsel, Ibraheem Bashir, argued for bail on the grounds of the defendant’s ill health and the release of Alex’s vehicle from police custody, as well as restricting the media from covering the court proceedings.

Presiding over the case, Magistrate Cendy Oluwaseyi rejected the plea to restrict media coverage, asserting journalists’ rights to report, and ordered the vehicle to remain in police custody pending further investigation.

Despite the seriousness of the charges, Magistrate Oluwaseyi granted bail to Alex, requiring two sureties to provide a bond of one million naira each, while one of the sureties must be a civil servant not below level 10, and both must furnish utility bills as well as proof of residence in the FCT.

The case is set to reconvene on May 16th.
