By:Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Lagos State government says is it is adequately prepared as Cameroon is set to open the flood gates of Lagdo Dam on the Benue River in Cameroon.

The Permanent Secretary in the State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr Femi Oke-Osanyitolu who made this known in a statement explained that in line with the paradigm shift from response to effective & efficient Disaster Management, preparedness and prevention, the State had carried out holistic measures including the sensitization and advocacy in historically affected areas, empowerment of local emergency management committees, strengthening of the early warning systems and clearing of drainage and gutters at the State and Local government levels.

Dr Oke-Osanyintolu emphasised that the Agency remains at high alert with improved infrastructure to manage any imminent challenges and urged residents to remain calm.

The Cameroonian authorities had announced plans to open the dam in a release dated 21st of August due to heavy rainfalls around the dam catchment areas in Northern Cameroon.
