TEACHER’S DAY: GOV UBA SANI SAYS GOVERNMENT WILL SOON COME UP WITH A REASONABLE PACKAGE FOR WORKERS 05-10-23
By Sadiq Aminu Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State says the State Government will soon come up with a reasonable package for the State Government workers.
He disclosed this in a message to this year’s world teachers day celebration in Kaduna.
The Governor, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Labour Matters, Comrade Adamu Sama’ila said an assessment had been conducted to ascertain the state of affairs of state owned public schools for possible intervention.
He pledged to operate an open door policy to all critical stakeholders in the State, with a view to carrying everyone along.
In his welcome address, State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers(NUT), Comrade Ibrahim Dalhatu advocated the recruitment of more teachers in public schools to address the imbalance in pupils-teacher ratio.
He attributed the influx of pupils into public schools to the introduction of school feeding programme by the immediate past administration, as well as the sharp increase of school fees in most private schools, which forced many parents to opt for public schools, while the number of teachers in such schools remain stagnant.
Comrade Dalhatu appealed to the State Government to consider teachers in the distribution of palliative packages with a view to cushioning the effect of fuel subsidy removal.
In a paper presentation, a lecturer at the Kaduna State University, Dr Abdulkadir Yahaya Muhammad stressed the need for teachers to align with the dynamic teaching landscape, and the need to learn, develop and innovate new ways to support today’s learners.
He called on government at all levels to train, re-train and organise workshops to keep teachers technologically compliant.
To achieve this according to Dr Abdulkadir, smartphones should be procured and distributed to teachers free of charge, or at a subsidized rate.
The world teachers day is a day set aside by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation-UNESCO, to celebrate teachers and the teaching profession.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage”
