RESIST ANY ATTEMPT TO SILENCE THE MEDIA, SCHOLARS URGED                                                                                12-10-23

By Sadiq Aminu                                                     The Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, says for democratic system to grow in any society Media must be allowed to operate freely.
At a news conference in Abuja, a Media Scholar and the Coordinator of the School Mr. Paul Obi, who described the Media as an important pillar to the survival of any nation’s democracy, urged the media to resist any attempt to silence the media in the name of regulation.
Mr Obi, emphasized that Media should be allowed to carry out its statutory responsibilities of holding people to account without unnecessary interference from any body.
“As a school, involved in furthering the frontiers of democracy, we take the issue of media censorship as very critical and as an ominous danger to Nigerian democracy. So, this is not the first time we are intervening in such critical matters, we have through our robust scholarship and research, pursued these topics and issues rigorously.”
The Director of the School, Dr. Sam Amadi, while calling on the Media to avoid self censorship, said interference on Media organization should be on the basis of strict National interest.
Dr. Amadi, also commended the media for always keeping to their responsibility in ensuring that the views and opinions of the citizens are heard on national issues.
