EDUCATION: PRESIDENT TINUBU APPROVES TAKE-OFF OF 6, OUT OF THE 14 SPECIALIZED UNIVERSITIES                                                                       19-10-23

By Sadiq Aminu                                                         The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, stated this in Abuja while speaking with newsmen on his visit to President Tinubu.

Professor Mamman explained that 2 of the affected universities were in the field of agriculture, 2 in Colleges of Education, and the other 2 to focus on the field of medicine.

The Minister stressed that all the 14 specialised universities approved by the previous administration would have been built by the current administration, but that lack of funds compelled it to stagger the establishment of the 6.

“Tertiary institutions are highly capital intensive, they need a lot of money, especially at that takeoff stage, for infrastructure, staff recruitment and all other needs. By the time you want to start about 12, 14 institutions at once is a very heavy burden on the finances of government, so that’s why”, he said.

The Minister also said the President had approved the completion of the National Library, envisaged to be completed in 21 months’ time, as the nation’s depository.

On the arrears of the recent salary increment in tertiary institutions, the Minister said a memorandum had been sent to the National Salaries, Income, and Wages Commission for the implementation of salary adjustment.

He further said that the government is at verge of constitution governing boards of universities that were recently dissolved.
