By Sadiq Aminu                                                               The European Union has offered postgraduate scholarships to one hundred and forty two young Nigerians through its educational programme, Erasmus.

The EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ms. Samuela Isopi made this known in Abuja at the orientation programme for the awardees.

Ms Isopi said the beneficiaries have been admitted to study courses such as Renewable-based Power Systems, bio refinery, and Public Health in different European universities.

“From Nigeria we will have one hundred and forty-two awardees. This is a world wide very competitive process so that they can come back and put their skills at the disposal of the country to develop further.”she said

The EU Ambassador revealed that Nigeria retained the number one spot among beneficiaries of the EU postgraduate scholarships in Africa for the 6th year.

“You have made Nigeria the first country in Africa and one of the top five in the world. That makes us very proud but we know that Nigeria has a much higher potential and we expect the numbers to continue to grow in years to come” she said

The Minister of Youths, Dr. Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, represented by her Special Assistant, Mr. Aminu Ishaku urged the beneficiaries to take advantage of the programme to project the good image of Nigeria.

Some of the awardees expressed gratitude for the scholarship and pledged to make maximum use of it for the overall development of the nation.
