MANY LIVES LOST, OTHERS WOUNDED AS A VEHICLE RAMMED INTO TRADERS ALONG OYE-AGU ABAGANA IN NJIKOKA LGA OF ANAMBRA STATE 11-09-24
By Sadiq Aminu Many persons have been killed and others wounded when a vehicle driver lost control and rammed into traders along Oye-Agu Abagana in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The incident which occurred on Wednesday, 11th September also led to the destruction of make up shops and goods displayed along the road.
In a viral video currently being circulated on the social media, many lifeless bodies of young girls and underaged children as well as different wares were seen at the scene.
The crashed Sienna vehicle which belonged to a transport Company was said to be on a high speed when the driver lost control and rammed unto the roadside traders at the popular market.
Good-spirited individuals were seen trying to assist to rescue some of the trapped persons while relatives run to check the identity of the victims.
Two residents Innocent Kenechukwu and Mr Sunday Ukanna, who spoke with Africa247 Correspondent, described the incident as an unfortunate but avoidable disaster.
Speaking on the development, the Chairman House Committee on Trade and Commerce, Mr Innocent Ojike, empathized with the families of the victims.
Mr Ojike, who represents Oyi constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, said the present government of Professor Chukwuma Soludo has always discouraged street trading and have done a lot including installing barricades in some markets to stop street trading.
He appealed to residents to learn from the incident and avoid street trading which exposed both buyers and sellers to dangers.
As at the time of filling this report, personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps and other security agencies were on ground to offer help and ensure free flow of traffic in the ever busy area.
Confirming the incident , the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Tochukwu Ikenga said preliminary information reveals that the accident occurred due to break failure of the Toyota Sienna vehicle carrying passengers enroute Lagos.
According to him, the vehicle has been recovered and investigation ongoing into the accident that left five persons injured.
