In a major step towards bridging the digital divide and advancing Nigeria’s digital economy, the Federal Government has inaugurated a modern ICT Centre in the Akesan community of Alimosho LCDA, Lagos State. The initiative aims to equip local youth with essential digital skills and open new economic opportunities.

Speaking at the commissioning, the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Mr. Kashifu Inuwa, highlighted the centre’s role in expanding access to digital literacy and fostering innovation among young people in the area.

“This centre is a key element of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which prioritises economic diversification through digital innovation,” Inuwa said. “It will serve as a catalyst for change, enabling our youths to acquire globally competitive digital skills, launch startups, and develop solutions with international relevance.”

He emphasized the importance of community ownership and urged residents to maximize the centre’s potential. “This is your centre. Let’s use it to unlock opportunities and ensure it remains a sustainable resource for generations to come,” he added.

Representing the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Director of E-Government, Mr. Johnson Bayare, reinforced the federal government’s commitment to grassroots innovation.

“The Akesan ICT Centre will serve as a hub for digital skills training through the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme,” Bayare stated. “It will also support startups, creatives, and tech entrepreneurs, provide regulatory guidance, and foster collaboration with local institutions and private sector actors shaping Nigeria’s digital future.”

The commissioning ceremony drew participation from students, community leaders, and stakeholders across Lagos, underscoring the significance of the initiative in promoting inclusive digital development.
