By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the departure of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the completion of his second term.

Appointed in November 2015 and reappointed in 2020, Yakubu’s tenure officially ended after nearly a decade of service. President Tinubu commended his dedication and role in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy through credible elections.

In recognition of his service, the President conferred on him the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

Tinubu also directed Yakubu to hand over to the most senior national commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will oversee INEC pending the appointment of a new chairman.

In a letter dated October 3, 2025, Yakubu expressed gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve the nation.
