GIVE REALISTIC LIVING WAGE TO NIGERIAN WORKERS, HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES URGE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
05-06-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                                The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to quickly work out modalities to ensure realistic Living Wage for Nigerian Workers.
In an urgent motion of public importance by the House Minority Chief Whip, Mr. Isah Ali, the House noted that Nigerian workers are desirous of a living wage in order to cushion the effects of economic downturn being faced by the citizens.
The House during the motion also urged the government to further consider the downward review of electricity tariff, to reduce the suffering of Nigerians.
Mr. Ali explained that the current Minimum wage could not address the plights of Nigerian workers, hence the need to provide living Wage for the workers.
The House Minority leader, Kingsley Chinda, who frowned at the shutting down of the National grid by the Labour Union, said the Passage of the Living Wage should be given the same speed of passage like that of National Anthem Bill.
The Deputy Speaker Mr. Benjamin Kalu, who Presided over the Plenary, cautioned the Organized Labour to always adhere to Labour laws while embarking on Industrial Action.
Other members who contributed to motion called on the parties involved to handle the situation with utmost precaution to avoid escalating to uncontrollable level.
