HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO REVIEW NATION’S JUDICIAL SYSTEM 09-10-24
By Sadiq Aminu The House of Representatives has called for the review of the nation’s Justice and Judicial System in order to restore Public Trust in the country’s Judiciary.
This call by green Chamber was sequel to a motion by the member representing Alimisho Federal Constituency of Lagos State, Mr. Ganiyu Adele Ayuba. The House note that delays in the judicial system call for concern and gradually undermining the public’s trust in the judiciary.
Mr. Ayuba while moving the motion expressed concerns that in some States, cases in trial courts that should be resolved within months last for four to five years before judgement is delivered especially long-term detentions of suspects, prolonged chieftaincy disputes, and unresolved commercial litigation, which pose significant challenges to democratic and economic progress of the nation.
He explained that the public’s confidence in the court system may be damaged if immediate action is not taken to address the backlog in the justice system and administration, which could force people to decide to take law into their hands.
Adopting the motion the House referred the matter to the Constitutional Review Committee for further legislative action.
