ABIA LAUNCHES MINI-GRID POLICY FOR RELIABLE POWER

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

Abia State has taken a bold step toward reliable electricity with the signing of the Mini-Grid Regulation Framework in Umuahia by Governor Alex Otti.

He said the new policy will open doors for steady power supply, boost businesses, and drive industrial growth across the state. Governor Otti also thanked the International Solar Alliance (ISA) for supporting the initiative and pledged commitment to renewable energy investment.

Commissioner for Power, Ikechukwu Monday, noted that Abia is among the first Nigerian states to create a clear legal and institutional framework for mini-grids.

ISA’s representative, Ms Onyi Iyizoba, described the policy as a milestone for Abia and Nigeria’s energy transition. Mr. Joanis Holzigel added that it provides simple procedures for registration, tariff setting, and community engagement, promoting rural development and industrialization.
