DANGOTE REFINERY EXPANDS CAPACITY TO 1.4 MILLION BARRELS PER DAY

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced plans to expand its capacity from 650,000 to 1.4 million barrels per day, making it the largest refinery in the world, surpassing India’s Jamnagar Refinery.

Group President Aliko Dangote revealed in Lagos that the refinery will also boost polypropylene production from 900,000 to 2.4 million metric tonnes annually, strengthening local manufacturing of detergents and base oils.

He credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government for supportive policies such as Nigeria’s First, Naira-for-Crude, and the One-Stop Shop, which have encouraged industrial growth and domestic refining.

Dangote said the expansion will save billions in foreign exchange, reduce fuel imports, and create 65,000 jobs during construction, while 85% of the workforce remains Nigerian.

He also assured of steady fuel supply during the festive season despite global price increases, and confirmed the refinery’s upgrade to Euro VI fuel standards, meeting global environmental benchmarks.
