FCCPC HAILS COURT RULINGS UPHOLDING CONSUMER RIGHTS

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has praised recent court judgments that reinforce consumer rights in Nigeria.

The Lagos High Court ordered Multichoice Nigeria to pay ₦5 million in damages to a DStv subscriber, Mr. Ben Onuora, for unlawful disconnection despite verified payment. The court ruled that the action violated the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, which guarantees consumers’ rights to fair and quality service.

Similarly, the Enugu High Court declared Peace Mass Transit’s “no refund” policy illegal and awarded ₦500,000 in damages to passenger Mr. Tochukwu Odo after his fare was withheld for an uncompleted trip.

FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman, Mr. Tunji Bello, commended the judiciary for strengthening public confidence and accountability, noting that these rulings highlight the effectiveness of the FCCPA and the importance of lawful redress.

He revealed that between March and August 2025, the Commission recovered over ₦10 billion for consumers across 30 sectors, showing growing enforcement of consumer protection laws.

Bello urged Nigerians to continue reporting unfair business practices through the FCCPC complaint channels.
