KANO ASSEMBLY PUSHES FOR HAUSA AS LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Kano State House of Assembly has introduced a bill to make Hausa the main language of instruction in schools across the state.

Sponsored by Hon. Musa Ali Kachako (Takai Constituency), the Kano State Mother Tongue (Hausa Language) Education Enforcement Bill aims to improve learning, reduce failure rates, and preserve cultural identity by teaching in the mother tongue.

Kachako noted that countries like China, Japan, and India have advanced in science and technology by using their native languages in early education. He said the move would make learning easier and strengthen education quality in Kano.

The bill was forwarded to the House Committee on Education for further review.

Meanwhile, Hon. Zakariyya Abdullahi Nuhu (Gabasawa) proposed establishing a College of Agriculture in Gabasawa to boost agricultural education and local economies.

The Assembly also received a request from the state government to establish a new polytechnic in Gaya and create a Local Governments Service Commission.
