BISHOPS DECRY GROWING LAWLESSNESS IN NIGERIA

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

Catholic bishops in Nigeria have expressed deep concern over what they describe as rising lawlessness and insecurity across the country, urging citizens not to lose hope despite worsening economic and social challenges.

In a joint Christmas message by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, the bishops said many Nigerians are living in fear and uncertainty as hardship, violence and displacement continue to take a heavy toll on families and communities. They noted that persistent insecurity has destroyed livelihoods, separated loved ones and claimed innocent lives.

Referencing recent abductions, including those involving students and school staff in Niger State, the bishops said such incidents reflect the daily suffering of Nigerians trapped in an atmosphere of fear and instability. They stressed that every victim of violence is a life of great value and dignity.

Despite the bleak situation, the bishops said the message of Christmas offers hope, renewal and the assurance that Nigeria’s challenges can be overcome through justice, unity and respect for human dignity. They maintained that the nation’s wounds, though deep, are not beyond healing.
