RMAFC REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY
The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening integrity, transparency, accountability and ethical conduct in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities. The Chairman Dr. Muhammed Bello Shehu OFR stated this at the opening ceremony of a five-day sensitization and capacity-building workshop organized by the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) of the Commission for the newly recruited officers in the Commission’s headquarters and state offices in the North-West geopolitical zone of the country.
The workshop scheduled to hold from the 14th to 18th September 2026 at Bafra Hotel, Kaduna State, organised in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), forms part of RMAFC’s broader institutional efforts to promote a strong culture of integrity and compliance with the principles of legality, accountability, transparency and due process within the public service.
Delivering the opening remarks on behalf of the Chairman of the Commission, *Dr. Mohammed Bello Shehu*, OFR, the Federal Commissioner representing Kwara State and Provost of ACTU in the Commission, Hon. Ismail Muhammed Agaka, welcomed participants to the five-day programme and conveyed the Chairman’s appreciation to the ICPC for its continued partnership with the Commission in strengthening integrity, accountability and transparency in the public service.
He noted that the constitutional responsibilities entrusted to RMAFC place the Commission at the heart of Nigeria’s fiscal governance and therefore require not only competence and diligence, but also an uncompromising commitment to integrity. According to the Chairman, public trust is earned when public officers discharge their duties honestly, transparently and responsibly in the overall interest of the public.
Dr. Shehu emphasized that the fight against corruption is not the responsibility of ACTU or ICPC alone, but a personal and institutional responsibility shared by every public officer entrusted with public resources, official responsibilities and the affairs of government.
“Every decision we take, every public resource we handle and every official process we undertake must withstand the tests of legality, accountability, fairness and transparency.”
He posited that corruption does not begin only with the taking of bribes or diversion of public funds, but can also manifest through abuse of office, conflict of interest, favoritism, manipulation of official processes and deliberate disregard for established rules and procedures. Dr. Shehu therefore charged officers to develop a culture in which integrity is not merely preached but consistently demonstrated through their daily conduct, professional decisions and interactions with members of the public.
He urged participants to take full advantage of the five-day programme by deepening their knowledge, engaging actively with the resource persons and, most importantly, translating the lessons learnt into improved professional conduct and service delivery in their respective offices.
“As officers of the Commission, we must be above reproach. Let integrity guide our decisions, accountability define our actions, and service to the Nation remain our overriding commitment,” he said.
He further advised participants to regard the workshop as an important foundation for their professional careers and encouraged them to demonstrate humility, mutual respect and professionalism in their dealings with colleagues and members of the public.
In his welcome address, the Chairman of ACTU in the Commission, *Dr. Idris Musa emphasized the need for every public servant to recognize the fight against corruption as a collective responsibility.
Dr. Musa urged participants to ensure that their decisions and actions are consistently guided by integrity and accountability in the intrest of the nation. He cautioned officers against practices capable of undermining public confidence in government institutions, including abuse of office, conflict of interest, favoritism, manipulation of official processes and deliberate disregard for established rules and procedures.
The ACTU Chairman called on participants to uphold transparency and accountability in the handling of public resources and execution of official responsibilities, stressing that the conduct of public officers must continually justify the confidence and trust reposed in them by Nigerians.
In her remark, the representative of the ICPC at the occasion, Dr. Anike Adeshina, Assistant Director, public education stated that the sensitisation workshop is part of the broader anti-corruption drive of the Federal Government designed, among other objectives, to induct new staff into a culture of ethical and responsible public service.
She added that the programme seeks to strengthen participants’ understanding of the importance of conducting government business in accordance with established laws, regulations, procedures and ethical standards.
Dr. Adeshina explained that participants are expected to develop a deeper appreciation of the need to promote and protect integrity within the workplace while actively rejecting practices that contradict the ethics of the public service. She therefore commended the Chairman of RMAFC for organizing the workshop.
A cross section of participants interviewed at the workshop expressed optimism that the five-day sensitisation and capacity-building programme would enhance their ethical conduct and improve the quality of service delivery within the Commission.
Speaking on his expectations, *Aminu Sani*, an Accountant at the RMAFC Zamfara State office, said the training would provide him with additional knowledge and experience to effectively handle his responsibilities.
Similarly, *Aminu Ibrahim Imam*, a Manager and a Chartered Accountant in the Audit Department identified accountability, transparency and integrity as key values expected of them at the end of the workshop. According to him, these principles are particularly important to the work of RMAFC, given the Commission’s critical role in the management of the nation’s revenue.
