The Ebonyi State Government has arrested more than 30 commercial sex workers and sealed an unapproved guest house in Abakaliki as part of efforts to enforce urban planning regulations and address security concerns.
The Commissioner for Capital City and Urban Planning, Prince Richard Idike, carried out the action during a joint inspection of unapproved buildings and ongoing projects in the state capital.
The arrested individuals have been taken into police custody, while the owner of the guest house remains at large.
Idike said the facility was sealed over alleged security concerns linked to reported prostitution and the sale of hard drugs and illicit substances. He warned developers against constructing buildings without obtaining the necessary approvals and complying with state building regulations.
The Commissioner for Internal Security, Prince Etta, said the government would not allow business premises to be used for criminal activities. He urged residents and security agencies to strengthen surveillance and report suspicious activities to help maintain peace and public safety.
