The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to introduce Spanish, German, Chinese and Russian into Nigeria’s school curriculum to strengthen the country’s diplomatic and international relations.
The House also called on the Federal Ministry of Education to restore Biology as a compulsory subject for senior secondary school students, following concerns that its removal could limit students’ basic scientific knowledge.
The resolutions followed a motion sponsored by Deputy Minority Whip Ibrahim Isiaka, who said learning foreign languages would help address the shortage of interpreters and reduce Nigeria’s reliance on foreign language experts.
Lawmakers urged the ministry to develop a framework for recruiting and training qualified teachers for the proposed languages. They also directed relevant House committees to work with the ministry to ensure the implementation of the resolutions.
