The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved 66 petitions challenging the final lists of candidates for the 2027 governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.
The petitions followed the publication of the final candidates’ lists on October 10, 2026, and bordered on the omission of political parties, wrongful inclusion of candidates and alleged multiple nominations.
INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, disclosed this in a statement, explaining that the commission received 69 petitions from 12 political parties across 26 states over the governorship elections.
He said 41 of the petitions were upheld, while 28 were rejected after the commission reviewed the complaints and relevant records.
For the State Houses of Assembly elections, INEC received 61 petitions from 11 political parties across 11 states. Of these, 25 were approved, while 36 were rejected.
The commission said candidates and political parties whose complaints were upheld would be reflected in updated lists to be published on its website.
