NLC SAYS SCHEDULED PROTEST FOR TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY IS AGAINST RISING COST OF LIVING 21-02-24
By Sadiq Aminu The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says the protest scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday next week is a peaceful one against the high cost of living experienced by Nigerians.
In a statement on Wednesday, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero says Organized Labour cannot fold its hands and pretend that all is well.
Comrade Joe Ajaero highlighted the high cost of living in spite of the suffering, spiralling inflation, deepening poverty and the naira at an exchange rate of N1,900 to the US dollar.
The Department of State Services (DSS) had asked the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to shun the planned nationwide protests over hardship and astronomical rising cost of living in Nigeria scheduled to hold on February 27 and 28.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by its Director of Public Relations & Strategic Communications, Dr Peter Afunanya, says that while it recognised protest as the legitimate right of the labour movement, it however urged the organised labour to shelve the plan in the interest of peace and public order.
The DSS further calls on parties to pursue dialogue and negotiation rather than engaging in conducts that could heighten tensions.
