PRESIDENT TINUBU SAYS COLLECTIVE EFFORTS AND DETERMINATION CAN NAVIGATE ECOWAS PROBLEMS 23-02-24
By Sadiq Aminu President Bola Tinubu says through collective efforts and determination the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, can navigate the the problems confronting the sub-region and chart a course towards a more peaceful, secure, and prosperous future.
The President stated this in Abuja, while declaring open an Extraordinary Summit on the Peace, Political, and the Security Situation in the sub-region.
Currently, some ECOWAS member-states have had unconstitutional takeover of government, with Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso withdrawing their membership of the organisation.
Although, ECOWAS had, during its last summit, threatened to deploy troops, particularly to counter the coup in Niger Republic, some circumstances compelled it to forego its decision.
With the current turn of events, making Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso withdraw their membership of the organisation, and uniting to repel any eventualities, caution must be taken to avoid preventable bloodshed.
This is the perception expressed by President Tinubu, the current Chairman of ECOWAS.
“It is incumbent upon us all to engage in constructive dialogue, exercise, prudence, judgement, and work collectively towards finding enduring solution that will lead to a sustainable peace, security,, as well political stability.
“This is why we must re-examine our current approach to the quest for constitutional order in four of our member states. I therefore urge them to re-consider the decision of these three nations to exit our home and not to perceive our organisation as the enemy because we are not the enemy”, the ECOWAS Chairman emphasised.
The latest summit will deliberate on the withdrawal of the trio, and discuss a memorandum on the update of the political situation in those countries, including the political crisis in Senegal, after which the next line action will be recommended.
