The British Council has celebrated a Nigerian teacher, Dr Peter Ogudoro, for his global impact as a trainer and as an outstanding alumnus of the UK higher education institutions.
The council honoured Ogudoro as a finalist at the Study UK Alumni Awards ceremony organised  in Lagos on Saturday, according to a statement.
The statement issued by Ogudoro quoted British Deputy High Commissioner Ben Llewellyn-Jones as saying at the event that Ogudoro was being celebrated for outstanding social action in Nigeria’s education industry.
“The Study UK Alumni Awards is a prestigious global awards scheme that finds and celebrates outstanding alumni of UK higher education institutions and the impact that they are having around the world.
“Award finalists are leaders who can articulate how they have used their UK education to make a difference in their professions, societies and countries,” it quoted Llewellyn-Jones as saying.
It also quoted the official as  saying that the winners would be invited to the United Kingdom to build networks and boost  careers.
The Nigerian Teachers Community, a Facebook platform which Ogudoro founded in 2016 and which  has a membership of about half a million people, is one of his outstanding accomplishments that earned him the honour.
The platform had won Ogudoro the Facebook Community Accelerator Award for 2021, from Facebook.
It has become a major destination for education researchers around the world.
These researchers joined the community to learn about teaching practices in Nigeria and other parts of the world.
The community is a free continuous professional development platform for Nigerian teachers and many others.
According to Ogudoro, the Nigerian Teachers Community is an online gathering of teachers and other education stakeholders with focus on empowerment of teachers for learner-centred teaching and significant improvement in their welfare.
“The University of Reading equipped me with the uncommon research, negotiation, leadership and learning skills as well as the amazing international network that have become invaluable currencies with which I purchase incredible opportunities to serve humanity.
“My wish is that governments at all levels in Nigeria will take advantage of this free learning platform to train and re-train Nigerian teachers for a more globally-competitive education system which is indispensable for accelerated development’’ he said.
Ogudoro earned a PhD in Education from the University of Reading with emphasis on career management, product and innovation diffusion, and attitude change.
He had earned a Master’s degree in Communication for Innovation and Development from the same institution.
