AVERT FOOD CRISIS, HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES URGE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT                                                                                                       28-02-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                        The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to take proactive step to avert worsening food crisis in Nigeria.
The House in a motion of urgent Public Importance also tasked relevant agencies to address food shortage ahead of the farming season.
The cost of food items in Nigeria in recent times has constantly been on the increase, despite Government interventions.
It has also been observed that some Nigerians have taken laws into their hands by selling food items at exorbitant prices
Worried about the development, the legislators urged relevant agencies to take proactive measures to solve the problem.
In an urgent motion of public importance, a member from Imo State Mr Chike Okafor, expressed concern that if steps were not taken more Nigerians would be subjected to untold hardship.
Contributing to the motion, a member from Niger State, Abdullahi Saidu, stressed the need to urgently tackle the menace.
The Deputy Speaker House of Representatives, Mr Benjamin Kalu, while calling for subsidy for agriculture, emphasized that the ministry of Agriculture should be empowered to effectively support farmers.
Adopting the motion, the House referred the motion to House Committees on Food security, Food Nutrition and Agriculture institution.
Also at the Plenary four out of the five bills presented before the House passed second reading, while the Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution, by changing the System of simple Majority of electing the President and State Governors was rejected.
