HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES URGE FG TO DECLARE STATE OF EMERGENCY ON FAKE DRUGS                                                                                                                                           07-02-25

By Sadiq Aminu                                                                 The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to declare State of Emergency on the Proliferation of Fake and substandard Goods, Drugs and Food in Nigeria.
The House in an urgent motion of Public importance moved by a member representing Ilorin West Asa Federal Constituency of Kwara State, Muktar Shagaya, the Green Chamber expressed concerns that Nigeria suffers economic losses of approximately ₦15 trillion annually due to counterfeit and substandard goods, as reported by the Standards Organization of Nigeria.

The House Mr. Shagaya noted that the alarming increase in the production, importation and distribution of fake and substandard goods, drugs, food and beverages across Nigeria, posed significant threats to public health, national security and economic stability of the country.
He explained that the unchecked proliferation of fake products not only jeopardized consumer safety but also discouraged genuine investment in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Mr. Shagaya pointed out that despite existing regulations, weak enforcement mechanisms and the absence of stringent penalties for offenders the perpetrators have continue with their nefarious acts thereby endangering public health.
Adopting the motion, the House urged the Federal Government to establish a special task force comprising Security Agencies, Regulatory bodies, and the judiciary to fast-track investigations and prosecution of individuals and businesses involved in counterfeiting.

The Green Chamber also urged the Federal Government to strengthen the capacity of regulatory agencies, particularly NAFDAC, Standard Organization of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Customs Service by providing adequate funding, modern equipment’s and advanced technology for effective surveillance, detection and enforcement.
