TENSION RISES IN IMO STATE AS A RESULT OF THE KILLING OF 4 POLICEMEN ON PATROL AT IRETE, OWERRI WEST LGA 31-07-24
By Sadiq Aminu Tension has continued to rise in parts of Imo state with more deaths recorded since the killing of four policemen on patrol at Irete, Owerri west local government area of the state.
Trigger-happy young men on Tuesday shot dead a policeman and a civilian at Nworieubi in Mbaitoli local government area and a young businessman at Amawire Orji in Owerri north after looting his boutique that opened for business.
While security agents have swung into action to arrest those responsible for the killings, there has been incidences of sporadic gunshots in parts of owerri the state capital by unknown gunmen, a situation that has forced residents to scamper for safety.
Although the cause of the recent security breach is not yet clear some residents told Africa247 correspondent that the shootings might not be unconnected with the four days sit-at-home declared in solidarity to the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Meanwhile the Public relations officer Imo state police command Mr. Henry Okoye has assured the people that security agents were on top of the situation and appealed to the residents to avail the police useful information that will lead to the apprehension of those responsible for the mayhem.
He noted that the hoodlums who are suspected to be members of the proscribed IPOB had adopted a gorilla style of operation but vowed to arrest them either dead or alive.
