By Sadiq Aminu                                                              In an effort to enhance social inclusion and safeguard persons with special needs from all forms of discrimination, Zamfara State government has announced plans to implement Persons with Disabilities Law in the State.

The Secretary to the State Government, Malam Abubakar Mohammed Nakwada said this when he received the Zamfara State Chapter of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities on a courtesy visit in Gusau.

Malam Abubakar Nakwada noted that, the state government under the leadership of Governor Dauda Lawal would expedite the process of implementing the provisions of the law.

“I have assigned the Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Affairs to appraise the Persons with Disability Law and come up with an actionable executive summary for onward submission to His Excellency, Governor Dauda Lawal within a week. We have no time to waste”

According to Nakwada, implementing the law would significantly enhance the social wellbeing of persons living with disabilities in the state.

He stressed that, Governor Lawal was passionate about things like that and assured to do everything possible to ensure its prompt implementation.

The SSG further emphasized the need for special treatment to such category of people owing to their conditions, lamenting that, the delay in implementing the law is regrettable.

He also appreciated the efforts of Save the Children and all other stakeholders who supported the process of making the law, adding that their efforts will not go in vain.

The Law was enacted by the Zamfara State House of Assembly and assented in 2022 but dumped by the previous administration.

“Among other things, the law seeks to establish a Board to safeguard persons with disabilities from all forms of discrimination, promote their access to opportunities in all aspects of life in Zamfara state”

In his remarks, the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Association, Alhaji Usman Nahuce thanked the SSG for granting them audience despite his tight schedules, recounting their years of struggles advocating for their rights which is about to materialize under the rescue administration.
