FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TAKES PROACTIVE MEASURES AGAINST FLOOD DISASTER                                                                           24-10-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                                 The Federal Government has set up a technical sub-commitee to conduct physical inspection of dams to ensure the safety of critical water infrastructure across the country.

The Director of Dams and Reservoirs at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources , Mal. Ali Ibrahim, made this known to newsmen during inspection of Dadin-Kowa Dam in Yamaltu-Deba local government area of Gombe state.

According to him the inspection which was prompted by the recent flooding incident at Alau Dam in Borno state would provide solution against the occurrence of disaster of such magnitude in the future.

Mal. Ali Ibrahim explained that the committee began it’s mission at the Alau Dam in Maiduguri , followed by the Mangu Dam in Plateau, and Dadin-Kowa Dam in Gombe.

He said the committee’s next point of call would be the Kiri Dam in Adamawa.

The Director of Dams and Reservoir however said based on preliminary inspection, Dadin-Kowa Dam appeared safe for the time being but that further investigations were necessary to assess the internal condition of the dam.

He said once the inspections were completed, the committee would submit a detailed report, including recommendations designed to prevent future disasters similar to the flooding that occurred at Alau Dam.
