YOBE STATE SECURITY AGENCIES PLEDGE  COLLABORATION TO COMBAT GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE                                                                                                                        03-12-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                                 Security agencies in Yobe State have committed to collaborate with human rights groups and NGOs to combat gender-based violence (GBV), rape, and other crimes against women and children.

This commitment was made during a town hall meeting held at Annour Hotel in Potiskum, to commemorate the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child.

The meeting, organized by Care Nigeria and UK Aid in collaboration with Women Lead in Emergency (WLiE), the Yobe State Ministry for Women Affairs, and Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), highlighted key achievements in addressing GBV.

State Coordinator, Women Lead in Emergency at Care Nigeria, Mrs. Wandu Zira George,
emphasized that the sixteen days activism would focus on crucial issues affecting girls, including education, rights abuses, rape, and domestic violence.

She attributed many cases of child abuse to street hawking, poverty, and illiteracy.

Mrs George urged parents to prioritize girls’ education to foster a more humane society.

A Guest at the meeting, Dr. Hassan Joda Bomai highlighted Yobe State’s high rate of out-of-school children, particularly in Potiskum LGA, where street hawking and abuse are prevalent.

He called for increased support from individuals, NGOs, and government at both federal and state levels to provide free education to vulnerable children.

Women Leader of WLiE, Tinja Liatu Mazam,
reported that over 400 women have received training to respond to Gender Based Violence emergencies in Potiskum.

Mazam explained WLiE’s localized approach, working with community and religious leaders to combat GBV effectively at the grassroots level.
