NYCN LEADERSHIP CRISIS: NATIONAL BODY APPOINTS CARETAKER COMMITTEE IN NASARAWA 10-05-25
By Sadiq Aminu Amid a lingering leadership crisis within the Nasarawa State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), the National President of the Council, Ambassador Sukubo Sara Igbe, has announced the formation of a caretaker committee to oversee the council’s affairs pending fresh elections.
The announcement was made during a press briefing held in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.
The leadership dispute, which has persisted for some time, has heightened tensions among youths and key stakeholders across the state. Representing the National President at the briefing, the Vice President of NYCN, Comrade Innocent Nduanya, said the intervention was in line with the Council’s constitution, aimed at restoring order and safeguarding the interests of youths in the state.
He explained that the decision was prompted by several factors, including a court injunction obtained by aggrieved members of the state chapter. The injunction halted the scheduled election following the expiration of the tenure of the Comrade Jaafar Loko-led executive.
“In light of the current situation, Comrade Solomon Damina John has been appointed as the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee to manage the affairs of the Nasarawa State Chapter of the NYCN until the crisis is resolved and a new election is conducted,” Nduanya stated.
He emphasized the importance of unity and urged youths in the state to embrace peace and work collectively toward resolving the impasse in the broader interest of the nation.
Also speaking at the briefing, the North Central Zonal Coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, Mrs. Deborah Simon Pitmang, who had arrived in Lafia to observe the planned elections, expressed disappointment over the court’s decision to suspend the exercise.
She called on youths and stakeholders to channel their energy into productive ventures such as capacity building and entrepreneurship, rather than engaging in divisive politics.
Reacting swiftly to the developments, embattled NYCN Nasarawa State Chairman, Comrade Jaafar Loko, rejected claims that his tenure had expired.
“I am still the duly elected Chairman of the Nasarawa State Chapter of NYCN. I was elected in 2022 for a four-year term,” he insisted.
Comrade Loko called on both the state government and the national leadership of the Council to remain impartial and to ensure that all decisions align with the NYCN constitution.
