INEC TO RELEASE NEW ELECTION GUIDELINES, TASKS RECS ON READINESS

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will soon publish an updated supplement on regulations and guidelines for conducting elections.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made this known during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in Abuja. He said the new guidelines will clarify the procedures for reviewing declarations and results during elections.

Professor Yakubu advised RECs to focus on practical staff training rather than elaborate workshops. He also directed them to submit plans on improving voter access to polling units, cleaning up the voters’ register, engaging stakeholders, and enhancing logistics and security.

He reminded the RECs of upcoming elections, including bye-elections in 12 states, the Anambra governorship poll, FCT Area Council elections, and the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections. He noted that some election activities have already started, like campaigns in Anambra and the publication of notices for other polls.

The INEC Chairman urged RECs to uphold their oath of office and deliver fair and credible elections for all Nigerians.
