NULGE APPLAUDS NASS OVER LG AUTONOMY DRIVE
By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban
As Nigeria marked its 65th Independence anniversary, local government workers in Abia State hailed the National Assembly’s push for full autonomy of local councils through the ongoing constitutional amendment.
Former NULGE President in Abia, Comrade Orji Akaji, said true autonomy would strengthen grassroots governance and promote real federalism. He noted that the union is mobilizing through rallies, consultations, and partnerships with labour and civil groups to secure the reform.
Also, Mr. George Eleweke of Umuahia South Council stressed that without autonomy, good governance at the grassroots would remain elusive due to state interference in council funds. He assured that NULGE will serve as a watchdog to prevent abuse of the system once autonomy is achieved.
