SENATE ORDERS PROBE INTO TROOP WITHDRAWAL, GENERAL’S KILLING

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Senate has directed its security committees to investigate why troops were withdrawn from Maga, Kebbi State shortly before terrorists abducted 25 female students, and to probe the killing of Brig-Gen Muhammad Uba in Borno.

The resolutions followed a motion on rising insecurity in Kwara, Kebbi and Niger States, sponsored by Senator Oyelola Ashiru, who described recent attacks as alarming and unacceptable.

Several senators condemned ransom payments and demanded stronger action against terrorists. Senate President Godswill Akpabio said Nigeria is “in a state of war” and urged unity in confronting insecurity.

The committees are to report back within one week.
