NIGERIA STRONGLY CONDEMNS BENIN COUP ATTEMPT, URGES REGIONAL UNITY

By; Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

Nigeria has condemned the attempted coup in Benin, calling it a “direct attack on democracy.” The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed serious concern over the early-morning power grab and praised Benin’s authorities for swiftly protecting state institutions and the President.

Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to democratic governance in West Africa, warning that unconstitutional changes of government threaten regional stability and decades of progress. The government urged calm, respect for the rule of law, and peaceful resolution of political disputes. It also called on ECOWAS, the African Union, and the international community to unite in defending democracy.

Nigeria assured Benin of its full support in promoting stability, democracy, and prosperity across the region.
