ECOWAS URGES RESTRAINT, RESPECT FOR VENEZUELA’S SOVEREIGNTY

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

ECOWAS has expressed concern over rising political and security tensions in Venezuela, urging the international community to exercise restraint and respect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. In a statement from Abuja, the regional bloc stressed that while states have the right to combat crimes such as terrorism and drug trafficking, such actions must not violate international law.

ECOWAS aligned with the African Union’s call for calm and inclusive dialogue, emphasizing that the future of Venezuela should be determined peacefully by its people. The bloc reaffirmed its solidarity with Venezuelans and its commitment to dialogue, multilateralism and respect for international norms.
