FIRE RAZES NIMET EQUIPMENT AT LAGOS AIRPORT

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

Millions of naira worth of weather equipment belonging to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency has been destroyed after a fire gutted part of Terminal One at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, who inspected the damaged section, confirmed that NiMET’s weather office was completely wiped out but assured that flight operations and weather services would continue using backup systems.

He revealed that some air traffic controllers were briefly trapped during the incident and later rescued, while four people sustained minor injuries. The minister dismissed sabotage claims, saying investigations are ongoing. He added that the affected old terminal was already scheduled for demolition, and rebuilding plans would now be accelerated.
