FG RAISES ALARM OVER 2026 FLOOD THREAT ACROSS 33 STATES

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Federal Government has warned that over 14,000 communities across 33 states and the FCT are at high risk of flooding in 2026.

Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, disclosed this at the presentation of the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook in Abuja, noting that hundreds of local government areas fall within danger zones.

He added that while many areas face severe risk, some communities are expected to experience only minimal flooding.

The government also introduced a new community-based flood forecasting system to improve early warning and response efforts.
