The Niger State Government has given ₦5 million each to the families of 37 miners who died while in an NSCDC facility in Minna.
The government also provided ₦2 million each to 32 artisanal miners who survived the incident.
Presenting the cheques in Minna, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago said the financial support was not meant to place a value on the lives lost, but to provide relief and support to the affected families.
Bago urged the beneficiaries to use the funds to start small businesses or support the education of their children and wards. He also reiterated the state government’s ban on illegal mining.
The Emir of Minna, Alhaji Umar Faruk Bahago, thanked the governor for the assistance and assured the government that the funds would be distributed to all identified beneficiaries.
