Nigeria has pledged to champion a West African Parliamentary Debt Oversight Framework to curb reckless borrowing and rising debt across the region.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Abbas Tajudeen, made this known at the 11th Annual Conference of the West African Association of Public Account Committees (WAAPAC) in Abuja. He stressed that public debt should drive development, not burden future generations.
Finance Minister Wale Edun highlighted that President Tinubu’s administration is focused on building an inclusive, sustainable economy. The Public Accounts Committee, led by Bamidele Salam, has already recovered over ₦200 billion for the federal government in one year.
Stakeholders at the five-day event called for stronger collaboration, transparency, and accountability to ensure public debt truly benefits citizens.
