EARLY RAINS NOT YET START OF RAINY SEASON, KWARA GOVT CAUTIONS FARMERS

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Kwara State Government has advised farmers across the state to avoid premature planting, warning that the recent sporadic rainfall does not indicate the commencement of the rainy season.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Afees Alabi, gave the caution while speaking on a local radio programme in Ilorin. He explained that occasional rainfall should not be mistaken for the establishment of the wet season, noting that early planting often leads to avoidable losses.

Dr. Alabi said climate variability has continued to disrupt traditional rainfall patterns, making it important for farmers to rely on verified weather forecasts, local conditions, and official agricultural advisories when making planting decisions.

He assured farmers that the state government is working with relevant agencies to improve the delivery of timely and practical weather information, while strengthening interventions aimed at boosting food security through mechanisation and irrigation-supported farming.
